Work in Progress - Emily, Juniper, and Don Aunt Ally's Cake

“What did she say?  Three-way call a ghost using a psychic?  Does that work?” The bakery lady asks.  She says it as if she expects Don to ask Emily about what she heard the girl say on her cell phone.

Don shrugs, blames the Internet for Emily’s fixation with spirits and asks the bakery lady about a cake with sprinkles.  He pops samples into his mouth and texts pictures of fancy fondants and buttercreams behind glass.  “Write ‘Happy Birthday,’” and then he starts to say Ally’s age.

“You shouldn’t put how old she is.”  The bakery lady looks over at Emily as if Emily should be involved in this discussion, but Emily shakes her head and continues her phone conversation with Juniper about ghost boyfriends and the sports car her cousin, Thom says shows up in the driveway on some days.

Emily tells Juniper her mom’s idea to invite Jillian, the psychic to read fortunes almost got them kicked out, again.  And she doesn’t understand what gets into her aunt sometimes.  “The psychic is strange, but it would have been fun.  Ally said it reminded her of the big block party where I ran away.”

“Do you think Jillian’s predictions would be as awful as the one she gave you?” Juniper asks.

“Maybe Ally remembers seeing Mickey that night, and it still freaks her out.  Jillian says she speaks to spirits.”

As much as Emily is unhappy with Ally, Ally doesn’t deserve the way Don flirts with the bakery lady.  He eats samples, the lady keeps providing more.  They’ve moved on from the evilness of the Internet to the fight about Grizzly coming to the party, to what time she gets off tonight.  Emily imagines driving the car over to her ghost boyfriend’s house.  (She’s been trying to three-way call Mickey using the psychic, but so far it hasn’t worked).  Juniper says she and Cliff aren’t back together, but at least they can go out and have a pizza.  She doesn't have an answer for why the cool car shows up whenever Emily isn’t at home.  Juniper doesn't say much more about the date, and Emily doesn't ask.  The bakery lady offers the last sample to Emily.

“What do you think?” She asks.  It’s a skinny sample, barely any frosting.

“Too sweet,” Emily says.

Juniper asks Emily if her mom is going to Ally’s party.

“I made the mistake of mentioning Jillian at dinner and talking about how I want to find out if I can see Mickey in any of these flashes of hers.”

When Don and Emily arrive home, Ally stays upstairs in her room, but Thom races into the living room.  He asks Emily if she saw the shiny red sports car in the driveway, and then he starts talking about cars all over his mom’s cake.
