Work in Progress - June 5 10 a.m. Marianne is like most women
I don't know what happened between George coming back, and now Chabichou is breaking up, but I've only got one boyfriend, and he's a ghost. On good days, I imagine a dance and what it would have been like to go. So far, Lyft has gotten me as far as the dry cleaners.
I open my reader. Fanta and Aphrodite are on an adventure with Persephone. It's hush, hush. I ask Fanta a dozen questions about what he knows about Marianne's break up, about Beast, and about the drama going on around me - but mainly about getting ready for the prom and then not going! The whole time I'm reading scenes about Aphrodite's gorgeous dress Marianne's head dips towards her espresso as if she can breathe the liquid into her mouth. And while it may not seem fair to tell a depressed woman about a goddess, my mother is like most other women, I start to describe Aphrodite's clothes, her head falls further.
"Everyone noticed you at that block party last year, but you'll never look that way ever again."
The butterfly on Marianne's arm moves a little, a twitch. And then she's talking about the party again for George and inviting the whole neighborhood and everyone we know. "We'll have it in a couple weeks," she says. And she starts flipping through her magazine studying the tight-fitting outfits.
I bet it ends up being her and me and maybe Delucca but nobody else.
"Why are you doing this?" And the other thing I'm wondering is what people she thinks she's inviting since she and Delucca aren't speaking after what happened with Chabichou (more about this later).
"People are coming. They want to know about George and Chabichou and before that, like what happened with George's tattoo place."
I don't believe her. But I start writing the guest list. So far, it looks like this:
Vanessa
Marianne
Belchamp
George (Last I heard he's somewhere in Madrid, but he could show up).
