Work in Progress - Vanessa

December 31
8 p.m.

"There are lights everywhere," Marianne says.

We walk up the drive to the New Year's Eve party.  Pavement turns into sand and the sound of cars passing by changes into speedboats.  The sea is everywhere now.

Stripes make you look fat, the Mean Girls say.  Aren't you brave?  Coming back here again.

Water rises to the steps at Ally and Don's almost to the front door.  Marianne doesn't seem worried.  She winks at me and squeezes my hand.  Her dress sparkles like the sea at midnight from the front porch, it's the same color as the eye on Persephone's couch (though with all the Mean girl noise it's hard to be sure about the exact shade of Onyx).

Marianne's dress shows off her thighs, the Mean Girls say.  She'll be the sexiest woman here.

"Wasn't it just moments ago, outfits draped over the bed and the floor in my room?"

Whatever.   Marianne's forgotten about the pool.  It's like it never even happened.

I ask the Mean Girls why they are being nice about the pool.

But they don't answer.  There are thighs everywhere.  And then we are lost in them.
