Beast Sightings - Y
“No pool,” Marianne says.
“Not sure where one would fit.”
I go on about a pool dad told me about. “Gigantic, it would take up the whole porch
and half of the yard next door.” This makes
perfect sense until she retreats inside.
“The chaise loungers stay,” she says. “I know what Delucca said.” Marianne slams the sliding glass door as she cradles
a cell phone next to her head.
“Maybe a hot tub?”
She waves me away to
one of the loungers and I dream a pool here like Dad said.
Marianne’s chatter makes me plan my own party. There are friends from class, my boyfriend, Beast
comes over. He brings bags of fast food;
his best friend Phil brings the beer.
Beast stuffs chips into my mouth, and beer drips from my chin on to the
plastic table.
“Wipe your face with a napkin,” Phil says. Beast laughs.
I laugh and spit half-eaten chips all over the table.
Marianne sits off to the side defending her loungers. She rambles away about the new boyfriend I
haven’t met and doesn’t correct my manners or notice the beer or the incredible pool. It shimmers.
Does she see it? Would she see it paved in gold? Would she see a hundred Phil's carrying kegs of beer?
“What’s the new guy like?” Beast asks.
“Too skinny. Too fat,”
Marianne says.
“How many boyfriends does she have?” Beast asks.
“Do I even notice?”
Marianne says. “We should all go out for
steak.” She doesn't say this to to me. I ask her his name, and she tells me about leftover chicken in the
fridge.
