Flickers II
“I’m sorry, Kimmie.” You say.
How long I stare at you standing by the fence after you go, I’m not sure.
“Was it the curfew?” I ask Big Sister. “Or the heels and the way I stumbled around in them? Or was it this candy cane hair? I didn’t think it looked so bad in a bun.” I kick off the shoes, pull all the bobby pins out, and then squeeze out of the Jessica dress.
A fairy girl stands behind Big Sister. “Take another, honey," the fairy girl says. Then you can have the prom here if you want.”
“Do not listen to fairy girls.” Big Sister says. She pushes her finger into my chest and adds, “You know why he left.” She seems so angry I stumble back without the high heels on my feet.
G.D. strolls into the kitchen and pulls a seat up to the table. "Where are the leftovers?" He asks. "And would you two stop fighting? Come on, let’s eat.”
And then even Big Sister sits down at the kitchen table along with the fairy girls and G.D. And we get hopped up on day old Chinese food - the take-out from last night. My friends have all the answers. I nibble a mushy egg roll and ask them what to do. They all say the same thing.
Go to the dance.
