Train Talk

 
All the things Julio told me today about the train:

1. It will take you out of here - all the way to California.
2. No one will think to look for you there.
3. You won’t even look for yourself.
4. Don’t tell Adrianna that you know.

What I overheard Julio tell Adrianna:

It will take us out of here.
No one else knows.

What Julio said was his reason for wanting to leave town:

I can be Julio.

I wanted to ask him more, but he wasn’t in the mood to talk.  So I had the conversation with Big Sister instead.

 “You just don’t get it.  Everybody pays attention to what I wear and what I say,” Big Sister said.  Her voice had dropped and she was pretending to be Julio now.

“We're playing this game, right?” I asked. 

"I'm offering you this great opportunity to skip town." Big Sister said.  "You don't have to go alone.  So what's your problem?"

"You seem sure."  I said.  "You already know what you'll find in California."

 Big Sister and I goofed around then and joked about Julio and the way he mixes styles and about how long it would take him to give fashion advice to somebody really famous and have his own brand.  But then she turned back into Julio and asked, "And what will you find when we get off the train?"

"I don't know,"  I said.  "I'm not sure if I will even recognize the place.  It's been a long time since I've been back."
